Awards for Research 

Applied/Public Policy Research Award (International Communication Association)
The award honors a scholar or group of researchers who have produced a systematic body of research in communication studying a particular applied or policy problem for the betterment of society. The program of research should be of continuing importance to a local, national, international, or global public.

Applied Urban Communication Research Grant (Eastern Communication Association)
The Applied Urban Communication Research  Grant is an annually endowed prize given to foster and promote significant inter-disciplinary communication research contributions that extend the boundaries of "applied research" by investigating real-life communication phenomena affecting urban communities. The prize is to be awarded to fund the development of original research that meaningfully centralizes the concerns of everyday citizens and their struggle to define, identify with, and/or construct "spaces" for discourse and/or engagement within cities.

B. Aubrey Fisher Outstanding Journal Article Award (Western States Communication Association)
Presented each year for the best article(s) appearing in the Western Journal of Communication.

Book Award (Rhetoric Society of America)
The Rhetoric Society of America gives a Book Award for the best work in rhetorical study in a given year. We welcome nominees in any branch of rhetorical studies. To be considered for the Book Award, a scholar must be a member of the RSA. The book award subcommittee will consider any book that has a designated author or authors and that meets the eligibility requirements. Generally, edited collections and second editions are not eligible for this award.

Brockriede Award (American Forensic Association)
The purpose of Brockriede Research Grant is to support research in argumentation. The Brockriede Grant is awarded competitively and funded by the American Forensic Association upon the recommendation of the AFA Research Committee and approval of the AFA National Council.

The Charles Kneupper Award (Rhetoric Society of America)
The Charles Kneupper Award is given annually to recognize the article published in that year's volume of Rhetoric Society Quarterly that the editorial board and the editor consider the most significant contribution to scholarship in rhetoric.

Communication Research as an Agent of Change Award (International Communication Association)
The CRAC prize of $500 is awarded to research that has a demonstrable impact on practice outside the academy, with clear benefits to the community. How communication research may serve as an agent of change and social benefit is open to definition with the application for the award.

Communication Research as Collaborative Practice Award (International Communication Association)
The CRCP prize is awarded to researchers who engage in innovative forms of collaboration to address emergent problems in media and communication. It is designed to encourage collaborative communications research combining the efforts of researchers, practitioners, and other interested parties in the production of new knowledge.

Communication Research as an Open Field Award (International Communication Association)
The CROF prize of $500 is awarded to researchers who have made important contributions to the field of communications from outside the discipline of communications. It rewards and supports dialogue with other fields and institutional locations in which vital new understandings of the communications environment and the public sphere are being produced.

Daniel Rohrer Memorial Outstanding Research Award (American Forensic Association)
Honors the outstanding research monograph published in argumentation research during the given year.

Distinguished Research & Distinguished Teaching Fellows (Eastern Communication Association)
Research Fellow status may be awarded annually in recognition of distinguished research. The teaching fellows program recognizes a distinguished career of teaching excellence in the field of communication and is limited to colleagues who have active and continuous service to ECA.

ECA Article of the Year Award (Eastern Communication Association)
The ECA Article of the Year Award is presented annually to the most outstanding journal article published during the previous calendar year in Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, or Qualitative Research Reports in Communication.

Eleanor Blum Distinguished Service to Research Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
Created to recognize people who have devoted substantial parts of their careers to promoting research in mass communication. It is named in honor of its first recipient, Eleanor Blum, a long-time communication librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Everett Lee Hunt Award (Eastern Communication Association)
The Everett Lee Hunt Award is presented annually at the discretion of the ECA Committee of Scholars. The Hunt Award reflects the philosophic commitment and scholarly contributions of Everett Lee Hunt, one of the founders of the discipline of communication and the eighth president of ECA (1927-1929). The nominee should have provided a major contribution to the understanding of rhetoric and communication as a human function in the contemporary world; a means of explaining and realizing public responsibilities beyond the discipline of communication; and/or an intellectual and humane instrument for merging diverse fields of knowledge in a way that infuses them with moral purpose and public significance.

Federation Prize (Central States Communication Association)
The Federation Prize promotes intellectual development and communication scholarship by awarding a cash prize of (up to) $3000 to a selected proposal authored by a CSCA member.

ICA Fellows Book Award (International Communication Association)
Open to all ICA members, this award recognizes those books that have made a substantial contribution to the scholarship of the communication field as well as the broader rubric of the social sciences and have stood some test of time.

James W. Carey Urban Communication Award (International Communication Association)
This annual prize supports communication research that enhances urban social interaction and civic engagement in an age of global communication. It encourages applied research on the role of city and community at a time when communication technology alters the parameters of the urban landscape. The award is for proposals that feature innovation and creative approaches to reconciling the growing gap between tradition and modernity as suburban sprawl threatens the very nature of urban traditions.

Janice Hocker Rushing Early Career Research Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors SSCA members who have demonstrated exceptional scholarly ability through research and publication early in their academic careers.  Nominees must be untenured, assistant professors in the field of communication, and no more than five years shall have passed between nominee's appointment to the rank of assistant professor (or receipt of terminal degree) and the time of the award.

Kreighbaum Under-40 Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
The Krieghbaum Under-40 Award honors AEJMC members under 40 years of age who have shown outstanding achievement and effort in all three AEJMC areas: teaching, research and public service. Nominees must be AEJMC members in good standing at the time of the nomination and during the preceding year.

Michael M. Osborn Teacher-Scholar Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors SSCA members who have balanced professional careers, having achieved excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

The Milton Dickens Award for Exemplary Empirical Research (Western States Communication Association)
This award recognizes an outstanding article in Communication Reports. The award is given at the end of each editorial term (i.e., once every three years

Outstanding Article Award (International Communication Association)
The award honors an article published in a refereed journal during the previous two calendar years (between January 1 and December 31). Theoretical articles and empirical articles are eligible, as are review articles that effectively redefine a problem. Selection criteria include coherence of argument, quality of conceptual development, and effective use of evidence.

Outstanding Book Award (International Communication Association)
The award honors a book published in the previous two calendar years (between January 1 and December 31). The selection committee judges each nominated book on several criteria including the importance of the problem it addresses to the fields represented in ICA and to communication studies as a whole, the quality of writing and argument, and the strength of evidence it presents.

The Past Presidents’ Award (Eastern Communication Association)
The Past Presidents' Award is presented annually to an outstanding ECA member. To be considered for the award, the nominee must: (1) be a current member of ECA; (2) be 7-15 years beyond the doctorate; (3) be a tenured faculty member; (4) have contributed a significant body of research to the communication discipline and (5) possess a significant record of continuing service to ECA.

The Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
Recognizes a body of significant research over the course of an individual’s career. The award is named in honor of Paul J. Deutschmann, who developed the College of Communication Arts at Michigan State University.

RSA Fellows (Rhetoric Society of America)
Fellows of the Rhetoric Society of America have produced scholarship in rhetorical studies that is remarkable for its quality and quantity, have participated in the work of the RSA, whether on the Board, on its committees, or in other capacities, and have worked to increase the visibility and influence of rhetorical studies through public lectures, teaching, advocacy, or other activities.

Rose B. Johnson SCJ Article Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors the author or authors of an outstanding, significant article published in the Southern Communication Journal.

Steven H. Chaffee Career Productivity Award (International Communication Association)
The award honors a scholar (or small group of collaborating scholars) for sustained work on a communication research problem over an extended period. The selection committee favors research that is original, asks conceptually rich questions, and offers empirically sound evidence.

Tankard Book Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
Authors who are AEJMC members may self-nominate any first-edition scholarly monograph, edited collection, or textbook published the current year of call that is relevant to journalism and mass communication. Nominated books can be co-authored or co-edited, and must be well-written and break new ground.

WSCA Scholar Award (Western States Communication Association)
The award recognizes sustained contribution to the study of human communication from a member of WSCA who has made a difference in the way scholars and students think about the nature, function, and scope of communication.

Awards for Teaching 

B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award (International Communication Association)
Initiated in 1988 following the death of its namesake, this award honors outstanding scholars, teachers, and advisors who serve as role models in those capacities and who have had a major impact on the field of communication. Most importantly, recipients of this award have influenced the discipline through their former students, who themselves are important figures in the communication discipline.

Distinguished Research & Distinguished Teaching Fellows (Eastern Communication Association)
Research Fellow status may be awarded annually in recognition of distinguished research. The teaching fellows program recognizes a distinguished career of teaching excellence in the field of communication and is limited to colleagues who have active and continuous service to ECA.

Donald H. Ecroyd & Caroline Drummond Ecroyd Teaching Excellence Award (Eastern Communication Association)
The Ecroyd Award is presented annually to recognize excellence in teaching. The specific criteria include: (1) ECA membership for five continuous years; (2) a full-time teaching position at any level of education at the time of nomination and (3) a demonstrated record of employing communication principles as the foundation for constructing pedagogical principles applied in teaching practices.

Dwight L. Freshley Outstanding New Teacher Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors SSCA members who have demonstrated teaching excellence early in their careers.  Nominees must teach courses in communication and have taught full-time for at least two and not more than five years.

John I. Sisco Excellence in Teaching Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors SSCA members who have consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching communication throughout their academic careers.  Nominees must be employed full-time teaching courses in communication for a minimum of ten years. 

Kreighbaum Under-40 Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
The Krieghbaum Under-40 Award honors AEJMC members under 40 years of age who have shown outstanding achievement and effort in all three AEJMC areas: teaching, research and public service. Nominees must be AEJMC members in good standing at the time of the nomination and during the preceding year.

Honors SSCA members who have balanced professional careers, having achieved excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Outstanding New Teacher Award (Central States Communication Association)
The Outstanding New Teacher Award recognizes individuals early in their professional career who are showing distinction as teachers. Nominees may be teaching at any level from grade school through graduate school.

Awards for Service 

AEJMC Equity & Diversity Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
The AEJMC Equity & Diversity Award, recognizes JMC academic units that are increasing equity and diversity among their faculty. Specifically, units will be evaluated for progress and innovation in racial, gender, and ethnic equity and diversity.

Baskett Mosse Award for Faculty Development (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
The Baskett Mosse Award for Faculty Development recognizes an outstanding young or midcareer faculty member in journalism or mass communication. Its recipient is awarded a stipend to be used toward work on a development or enrichment activity in any appropriate aspect of teaching, research or public service.

Distinguished Service Award (American Forensic Association)
An annual award recognizing long-term service to the American forensics community.

Distinguished Service Award (Eastern Communication Association)
The Distinguished Service Award honors an individual ECA member for his/her contributions to the field of communication in general and to ECA in particular. A committee appointed by the President, who acts as chair, selects the recipient.

Distinguished Service Award (Western States Communication Association)
Honors persons who have made considerable and long-standing contributions both to WSCA and to the field of communication.

The George E. Yoos Distinguished Service Award (Rhetoric Society of America)
The George E. Yoos Distinguished Service Award is presented biennially to a member of the Society who has made significant and sustained contributions to RSA and to the field.

Hall of Fame (Central States Communication Association)
Central  States Communication Association, complete with the highest level of service to the association through mentoring fellow members, fulfilling the responsibilities of various offices at the interest group and/or association level, participating on panels as a presenter or respondent, and/or advancing the mission of the association through other means, such as committee service, etc. Inductees must have shown a strong pattern of continued and dedicated service to the association over time, and, to qualify for induction, the candidate must have reached the rank of Emeritus Professor or be in the later stages of his/her career.

Outreach Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors SSCA members who have made significant contributions to the profession by facilitating the success and access of under-represented populations or the integration of specific groups of students, professionals, or scholars into the communication discipline or professional organizations.  The significant contribution may be the initiation of a major activity, the completion of a major project, or represent a lifetime of work with numerous individuals or on numerous meaningful activities.  The scope of the activity may be national, regional, or local, and might involve mentoring, advising, liaison, or other activities.

Student Awards 

The Cooper Award (Central States Communication Association)
The  Cooper Award is named after former CSCA President Pamela J. Cooper and is presented to one M.A. level graduate teaching assistant and one Ph.D. level graduate teaching assistant. At the annual convention, the recipients receive a $150 cash award and a certificate.

Dissertation Award (American Society for the History of Rhetoric)

Dissertation Award (Rhetoric Society of America)
The RSA Dissertation Award is presented yearly for the best dissertation in the field of Rhetorical Studies completed by a student member of the Society.

ECA Centennial Scholarships (Eastern Communication Association)
Two ECA Centennial Scholarships are awarded each year to one deserving Ph.D. student and one deserving M.A. student.

Franklin Shirley Award (Southern States Communication Association)
The Top Undergraduate Honors Conference Paper honors the most outstanding paper submitted each year to the Theodore Clevenger Jr. Undergraduate Honors Conference.

The Nafziger-White-Salwen Dissertation Award (Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication)
The award provides recognition for the best Ph.D. dissertation in the field of mass communication research excellence and includes a monetary reward.

Robert Bostrom Young Scholar Award (Southern States Communication Association)
Honors the most outstanding paper submitted to the convention each year by a graduate student.

Student Paper Award (American Society for the History of Rhetoric)
