American and Chinese Communication Scholars to Gather for Conference on Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization
(Washington, DC) — The National Communication Association (NCA) and the Communication University of China (CUC) will co-host their third biennial conference, “Communication, Media, and Governance in the Age of Globalization,” June 22-23, in Beijing, China.
With converging and diverging interests, China and the United States are increasingly intertwined in issues related to sovereignty and cyber-sovereignty, nationalism, citizenship, human rights, popular culture, climate change, and public health. This international conference will address these broad issues as questions about communication: about how our two nations engage with and envision each other, and about how our interlinked imaginaries create both opportunities and obstacles for greater understanding and strengthened relations.
“With harsh rhetoric flying between Washington and Beijing, Communication scholars can play an important role in building the bridges of collaboration and understanding that can fuel international peace,” said NCA Immediate Past President Stephen J. Hartnett of the University of Colorado Denver. “Our conference is therefore meant to enable scholars from America, China, and around the world to come together to forge the prudent and evidence-based communication habits and interpersonal connections needed to counter nationalist chest-thumping, fact-free propaganda, and ahistorical stereotyping.”
The conference will address three key topics, to be explored in panel sessions and workshops:
- Green Public Spheres and Environmental Communication, led by Phaedra C. Pezzullo, Associate Professor of Communication, University of Colorado Boulder
- Social Media and Mobile Communication, led by Guobin Yang, Professor of Sociology and Communication, University of Pennsylvania
- Global Health Inequalities and Communication Interventions, led by Mohan Dutta, Provost’s Chair Professor of Communications and New Media, National University of Singapore
NCA members, staff, and leadership will attend the conference, including NCA Immediate Past President Stephen Hartnett, NCA Executive Director Trevor Parry-Giles, and members of NCA’s Task Force on Fostering International Collaboration in the Age of Globalization. Following the conference, program leaders will publish a volume featuring some of the best work presented.
