Recent and Upcoming Episodes of Communication Matters

The February episodes of Communication Matters: The NCA Podcast highlighted a variety of timely issues, including Afrofuturism and relationships amidst COVID-19. 

Reynaldo Anderson (Harris-Stowe State University) and Lonny J. Avi Brooks (California State University East Bay) joined the podcast on February 11 to discuss topics related to Afrofuturism, including definitions of Afrofuturism, examples of Afrofuturism, the importance of Afrofuturism today, and how Afrofuturism can be incorporated in the Communication classroom. 

In a bonus episode of Communication Matters on Valentine’s Day, Liesel Sharabi (Arizona State University) and Stephanie T. Tong (Wayne State University) addressed how COVID-19 has influenced the formation and development of romantic relationships and the important role that technologies, including dating apps, play in initiating and maintaining relationships. 

Upcoming episodes include:

  • March 11: Karen Kangas Dwyer (University of Nebraska, Omaha), Pat Gehrke (University of South Carolina), Suzy Prentiss (University of Tennessee Knoxville), and Joshua Westwick (South Dakota State University) will discuss communication apprehension, including speech anxiety and strategies students and teachers can use to address it. 
  • March 18: Katharine J. Head (Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis), Christy J.W. Ledford (Augusta University), and Xiaoli Nan (University of Maryland-College Park) will discuss how public health communication about the virus has changed, as well as public health communication strategies related to the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • March 25: Representatives from the Central States Communication Association, the Eastern Communication Association, the Southern States Communication Association, and the Western States Communication Association will discuss how COVID-19 affected the regional associations, particularly the planning of regional conferences and events. 
  • April 8: Leonard Cassuto (Fordham University) and Robert Weisbuch (formerly Drew University) will discuss their book, The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education, the state of graduate school today, and the possibilities for reforming graduate education.
