For the 2022 convention, CSCA has developed convention safety protocols based on data-driven best practices for meetings and events. Read about them here.
- All convention attendees must either be fully vaccinated (at least two weeks out from your second dose of a two-dose vaccine series or your single dose of a one-dose vaccine series) or provide proof of a negative test dated no earlier than March 28, 2022. Following current CDC guidance, a booster is not required to be considered fully vaccinated. Prior to the convention, registrants will be emailed information about how to verify their vaccination or test result in a secure and HIPAA compliant way.
- Masks must be worn while inside the conference space (e.g., indoor common areas, session rooms, exhibit hall, etc.).
- Rapid antigen tests will be available in the registration area upon request, with results in 15 minutes.
When you register, you will also be asked to indicate which events you wish to attend. This year we have a Thursday night opening reception at the hotel as well as a Saturday night lecture and president’s party at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA).

The 2022 ECA convention will be an opportunity for (re)union! If all goes well, the 2022 convention will be our first “in person” ECA after two years of being unable to gather our community together. We seek to make ECA 2022 an occasion of joyous reconnection and opportunity to build new connections among our community members. We also seek to make ECA 2022 a location of reflection, deliberation, and learning as we emerge from the global pandemic and consider how we as Communication educators and scholars will contribute to a post-pandemic world.

Call for ECA Research Fellow Nominations
We are seeking nominations for 2022 Eastern Communication Association Distinguished Research Fellows. Criteria for consideration include:
- A record of distinguished research in the field of communication.
- A record of active and continuous engagement with ECA (e.g., editing an ECA journal, serving on an ECA editorial board, presenting research at ECA annual conventions, providing research-related leadership within ECA, and ECA interest group involvement).
- The nominee must be an ECA member for a minimum of ten years prior to the nomination.
- The nominee must be a living ECA member at the time of nomination.
Nominations for the 2022 ECA Distinguished Research Fellows must include the following information and materials:
- A letter of nomination
- The nominee’s complete and current curriculum vita
- Additional supporting documentation of an outstanding record of research as appropriate
No more than 1 percent of the ECA membership will receive this award in any given year. All previous ECA Distinguished Research Fellows serve as the selection committee.

ECA Distinguished Teaching Fellows
The Eastern Communication Association (ECA) is now soliciting nominations for 2022 Distinguished Teaching Fellows recognition. The Teaching Fellows program recognizes a distinguished career of teaching excellence in the field of Communication and is limited to colleagues who have active and ongoing service to ECA.
Potential candidates must be a living member of ECA at the time of nomination and have a minimum of ten (10) years of consecutive ECA membership. No more than 1 percent of the membership can be given this award in any given year. There are no self-nominations for the Distinguished Teaching Fellows.
The nomination is comprised of one (1) PDF file that includes the following information and materials:
- The nominator’s letter of nomination
- The nominee’s current vitae
- Up to five (5) letters of recommendation
- Representative supporting materials that suggest at least ten (10) years of excellent teaching activity (e.g., student evaluations, peer reviews, citations)
All previous teaching fellows serve as the selection committee with nominations.

Southern States Communication Association 92nd Annual Conference
Resilience Through Resistance

The 92nd Annual Southern States Communication Association conference, themed “Resilience Through Resistance,” will be held at The Hyatt Regency in Greenville, South Carolina, April 6 - 10, 2022. Like everything else in the world, SSCA came to a screeching halt in the spring of 2020 in response to the COVID epidemic that paralyzed the world. All that was normal became foreign, forcing us to create a new semblance of normalcy. This was further complicated by the racial pandemic that plagued the United States in response to the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor due to police. These dual pandemics presented us with many unimaginable challenges. Despite these traumatic events, we have all shown resilience in the face of resistance. The year 2020 has gone down in history as one of the most unfathomable, unjust, and deadliest years known to humankind.
The 2022 Southern States Communication Association conference affords us the opportunity to showcase the many ways that we as well as our students, community members, and others gathered the wherewithal to make it through and rise above the many obstacles thrown our way since March2020. Now, we have the wonderful opportunity to translate those difficulties into victories by showcasing the many ways that people either sought or found resilience. As Communication scholars, we should engage in self-reflexivity and take this moment to consider how our scholarship, pedagogy, and service contribute to a field that is germane to every facet of human life throughout the world.

Outstanding article published in 2020 in the Western Journal of Communication presented to Amy K. Way for “Meaning/fullness through Family: Discourses of Work among Poor and Working Class Youth.”
Milton Dickins Award
Exemplary empirical research published in Communication Reports presented to Abel Gustafson, Matthew T. Ballew, Matthew H. Goldberg, Matthew J. Cutler, Seth A. Rosenthal, and Anthony Leiserowitz for “Personal Stories Can Shift Climate Change Beliefs and Risk Perceptions: The Mediating Role of Emotion.”
