WSCA 2024 Fall Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for being a member of the Western States Communication Association (WSCA)! I appreciate your contributions to our association and the discipline through your engagement, and sincerely hope your membership in WSCA has served you well. WSCA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which is highly dependent on annual memberships to fund our work and our vitality as an association is wholly dependent on our members. Your participation in WSCA is essential to our sustenance and growth. I hope that we can count on your continued engagement in the association, and we welcome input that you have in terms of how to further our collective goals.

Memberships in WSCA run through the calendar year and most of our members renew before the end of the year. I am writing today to encourage you to renew your membership.

To renew online, please visit the WSCA Homepage (click here)

By renewing your membership, you will continue to receive the following member benefits:

  • Print & Online access to the Western Journal of Communication & Communication Reports
  • Access to WSCA News, our e-newsletter
  • Ability to connect with your interest group through our website
  • Access to the member directory online for professional networking
  • Reduced registration rate for attending the 2025 convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Lowered fees for other regional communication journals
  • The knowledge that you are supporting the work of the only professional association in the West designed for those who have an academic or professional interest in the study and practice of communication.

If you have questions about your membership or renewal, I’d love to chat with you. Please feel free to reach out to me at acuomo@westcomm.org and let me know if you’d prefer a phone or email.

Have you considered a Life Membership? Now is an excellent time to consider converting your membership to become a Life Membership. Life members earn uninterrupted and ongoing membership for life, including free convention registration. Becoming a life member means that you are supporting the future of WSCA and all the important work we do (plus, you’ll get a nifty “life member” flag to wear at the convention). I am happy to chat with you about converting your membership and the various payment options available.

Annual membership costs only $35 for students, $75 for tenure/tenure track members, $50 for non-tenure track members, and $45 for retired members. Departmental membership is $100.

You may also choose to join as a sponsor of the Western States Communication Association to support the ongoing work of the association for $200. I’d also like to acknowledge the Executive Council and the Legislative Assembly for thinking of new ways to support our organization.

I hope you will take the time to renew your membership today. Western States Communication Association appreciates your ongoing support, engagement, attendance, and membership, and I personally thank you as well.

I look forward to seeing you at our 95th annual convention, “Support,” in February 2025 in Albuquerque, NM -- Convention information will be available soon on our website.

With gratitude,

Anthony P Cuomo, Ed.D., West Los Angeles College

First Vice President, Western States Communication Association

Strategic Planning Survey Coming from Futures Committee

One of my charges, and joys, as Immediate Past President is to chair the Futures Committee. This year’s Futures Committee members are Amy Edwards (Oxnard College), Carlos Tarin (UT El Paso), and Maria Blevins (Utah Valley University). We invite you to participate in two upcoming WSCA Strategic Planning activities:

  1. A Qualtrics survey of WSCA members regarding initiative/activity suggestions that will contribute to enacting our Mission Statement. The WSCA Mission and Vision Statements (found here) are results of a participative process begun by Past President Marnel Niles Goins’ Futures Committee.
  2. A Strategic Planning panel to be held during the 2025 WSCA Convention. Time and place to be announced when the program schedule is released later this fall.

Please keep an eye out for an official WSCA email coming your way with the link to our Qualtrics survey. We will share and discuss results at the convention panel and generate next steps during the panel. The more members who participate in these two elements of our Strategic Planning process, the more useful and engaging the Strategic Plan will be for our members.

If you have questions or input about the process outside of these two opportunities, please contact me at hcanary@sdsu.edu.

Thank you!

2024 WSCA Elections Opening Soon!

As Chair of the WSCA Nominating Committee, Dr. Heather Canary is pleased to announce that we have a full slate of candidates for our upcoming 2024 elections. The Nominating Committee worked diligently over the summer and earlier this fall to secure commitments from a diverse set of WSCA colleagues to run for First Vice President, Second Vice President, and Legislative Assembly Members-at-Large. You will receive an email in early November through the WSCA member email system with instructions for accessing the ballot and submitting your votes.

Please take the time to read each candidate’s statement on the ballot and participate in electing our WSCA leaders who will shape our association for years to come. Your membership and your participation in our election process are extremely important for the vitality of our organization.

Please check your “promotions,” “junk,” and “social” tabs in your email Inbox if you don’t see a WSCA message by the end of the day on Friday, November 8th. You must be a member to vote in our annual elections.

Thank you!

Heather Canary, Ph.D., San Diego State University

NEW BOOK! Examining Blank Spaces and the Taylor Swift Phenomenon: An Investigation of Contingent Identities examines Taylor Swift’s art, her public image, and Swiftie fan communities. Keith Nainby argues that Swift’s songs offer a consistent focus on evolving identities, helping create the unique character of Swiftie fan communities. This book shows how Swift’s songwriting offers a consistent, and aesthetically rich, focus on narrators’ relationships with others. Narrators in Swift songs reflect on how their own sense of themselves unfolds over time, and the songs thereby highlight how our identities are contingent, dynamic, and relationally anchored.
